Problem:

The customer needed bearing components that could withstand salt water and the elements while offering a long service life. For one bearing position, a custom-made plain bearing was required.

Solution:
iglidur plain bearings from igus are maintenance-free thanks to incorporated solid lubricants and are durable even when subjected to saltwater in addition to wind and weather. As producing customised bearings is part of igus's core business, the company found a reliable solution for this application.

Maintenance-free in salt water and heat

Ceclo is a catamaran with a unique design. The environment plays a special role as it is both 100% electrically powered and 80% recyclable. Ceclo has been manufactured in the south of France since 2016 and the REV shipyard worked with igus back in 2014 during product development. Together, suitable components and materials were developed and selected for the catamaran's bearing points.

As REV shipyard products are used worldwide in a marine environment, special plain bearing materials are required for the bearing points. In addition to saltwater, the catamaran is also exposed to extreme heat and intensive use. As the plain bearings are used in the steering, the lifting mechanism of the electric motor and in the gearbox, they also need to have a long service life. It was therefore necessary to find the right plain bearing materials for these requirements. In addition, a plain bearing with special dimensions had to be manufactured for one of the bearing points.

igubal spherical bearings and the plain bearing with special dimensions made of the material iglidur H are now used. This material is characterised above all by a considerable resistance to temperatures and chemicals. It is also suitable for underwater applications and can therefore be used in catamarans without any problems.
